Sparkling Personalities
Whilst Eclipse Lighting Design is a recent ‘formal’ collaboration, our Directors of Design, Gordon & Andy, have been working together for a few years since meeting on an international project.
They bring over 50 years experience between them, and that is further bolstered by the rest of the team. We certainly believe that having a few different pairs of eyes on a project help deliver a better design.
Sparkling Personalities
Gordon Petrie Ph.D.
Gordon has been doing lighting design for many years, has a Ph.D. in Design Engineering and has always had a passion for technology and art! Knowing how light works, its design and application. It’s no surprise that he is a 5 th generation engineer; it is in his DNA!
Working with manufacturers, architects and clients he has contributed to (and won) many design awards His most recent accolade is being short listed in the global (D)arc awards (2023).
Gordon believes that good lighting design comes from the head and great lighting design comes from the heart.
He also likes to pass on his knowledge and often teams up with Andy, teaching lighting design to others, including CEDIA Lighting design classes and contributions to CEDIA expert panels.
An innovator, a creator he finds lighting design exciting and looks forward to every design challenge.
Gordon has always been an innovator and fully embraced the new LED technology back in 2006 when he designed the first ever all LED museum.
Over the years gordon has been involved with many high-profile lighting design projects such as opera houses, Cinemas, schools, hospitals, Churches, Universities, colleges, Monuments, Bridges, Castles, London department stores, Dubai hotels, Stadiums, Island retreats but Gordons real passion is making houses into homes.
When creating any lighting design Gordons first consideration is How will it make you feel, does the design make a bad space better and a good space great?
Gordon embraces the concept of a client’s budget and practical concerns, making things user friendly whilst ensuring budgets are considered at all times during the design process.
Sparkling Personalities
Andy Bull MSc.
From a background in Automotive Logistics and as a professional rally co-driver, Andy has always been aware of the importance of detail. He’s still active in the co-driver’s seat, but enjoys a less perilous career in lighting – although he did encounter some gun waving on a foreign project.
For several years Andy has generated and delivered considerable lighting training for CEDIA in Europe and USA covering Human Centric Lighting, Lighting Controls & New Technologies In Lighting.
Amongst the lighting designs that Andy has undertaken are an Eastern European Casino, an African Hilton Hotel, an island retreat, and some ‘out of the ordinary’ lighting projects in NHS hospitals. His private residence clients range from taxi drivers to a Formual 1 driver.
A strong advocate for simple lighting control, he gained his mantra of “if you have to train someone on how to control the lights, then it’s too complicated” from the hospital projects he delivered.
He is also prolific on lighting controls, with a personal mission to get everyone to love their controls.
